Websites don't get your location without your consent though. The only automatic communication with Google takes place when updating the malware and phishing protection.Īpart from that, I think the only other thing Google is used for is geolocation. The engine selected in the search bar is also used when you search from the address bar and the default home page ( about:home). To add different engines, see either of the links on the second line below. You can always remove Google from your list of installed engines (the only requirement is that you have at least one search engine - it doesn't matter which one). The only difference is that for some engines, there's a referral keyword added to the URL (in the case of Google, client=firefox). Furthermore, searching via the search bar is virtually no different than searching from the search engine's home page. It doesn't do anything unless you type something in it and submit your query. There is a search bar, and it happens to have Google as its default search engine. The less they can track me the better.ĭontrackmebro wrote:I'm wondering since Firefox is installed as a local program and it's giving access to Google through the search bar it *could* leak my MAC address and essentially allow them to spy on my activity regardless of VPN, proxy etc.Īs mentioned above, there's no "Google toolbar" in Firefox. Not like I'm doing anything illegal or have much to hide but I do break Googles TOS from time to time based on my work (automation, bots etc).

I'm wondering since Firefox is installed as a local program and it's giving access to Google through the search bar it *could* leak my MAC address and essentially allow them to spy on my activity regardless of VPN, proxy etc.

I specifically don't install anything Google related on my computer (chrome etc) because then they not only have my MAC address but essentially can spy on 100% of my activity.

I feel my MAC address is pretty secure on the web as long as the local programs I have installed on my PC aren't leaking my data. It doesn't work on me - there's a notice that pops up top saying blocked by Firefox for trying to run an outdated version of Java. The browser is mainly based around privacy and that's pretty much the polar opposite of Google. It's interesting Tor noted excessive captchas and 403 bans as the reason for switching the search box to startpage. I also don't know if this is true for other plug-ins. I don't know if this remains true today, but considering what a security catastrophe it is, it wouldn't surprise me. Java could expose your MAC address at one point (not due to a bug, but because of a feature). The article is poorly worded, so I can't tell if the attack was carried out against versions that were outdated at the time, or versions that are outdated compared to the latest version avaiable right now.

The only Tor leak I know of is last year's FBI operation. The Browser Component Overview section explains what differs from the official Firefox release.

This patch adds DuckDuckGo and StartPage to the Search Box, and sets our default search engine to StartPage.
